Principal Scientist, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology
Born and raised in southern India, Dr. Murthy Gudipati went to several schools in rural villages in Krishna and West Godavari Districts and urban colleges in Vijayawada before receiving M.Sc. (1981) at the University of Hyderabad, India and Ph.D. (1987) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. After a 3-year post-doctoral collaboration with Prof. Josef Michl (at Austin, Texas), he joined University of Cologne, Germany in 1990, where he was awarded Habilitation in Physical Chemistry (tenure) in late 1998. In 2007, Dr. Gudipati joined NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, where he studies the evolution of ices in the Universe and Origin of Life on Earth. He is currently involved in NASA's Europa Clipper mission in conducting detailed reconnaissance of Jupiter's moon Europa to investigate whether the icy moon could harbor conditions suitable for life.

Murthy Gudipati's research interests can be broadly defined as understanding the physics and chemistry of interstellar and Solar System ices through laboratory simulations, observations and instrumentation or simply evolution of ices in the Universe.

Murthy's research in the recent past has focused on physics and chemistry of cryogenic ices. This research builds on the over decades of earlier expertise on chemical physics / physical chemistry, spectroscopy, and photochemistry of atmospheric and organic molecules in cryogenic matrices. Most fascinating and still not well understood is the physics and chemistry of cryogenic ices, with applications ranging from evolution of icy bodies in the Solar System, in the interstellar medium; aerosol chemistry in Earth's atmosphere; chemistry of polar ices; origin of Life and radiation biology.

Murthy is convinced that education is the only way to help change the world and that the first few years of school is the most important foundational years. According to him “Education” is the key to change for sustainable high quality of life. And a great hope of change will be by having children to get formal education on mathematics, science, geology, geography, astronomy, music, and sociology in their initial schooling. Unfortunately, many parts of the world, including India do not have effective educational programs at the “roots” of the society – those places where children have no access to information, inspiration, and mentoring to be educated. Many of these children end up in the cycle of suppression and violence. The Idea of NSNY is to bring inspiration, information, and mentoring to these underserved children through personal involvement of students/scholars/teachers/entrepreneurs at their hometowns/villages – hence Nurture the Schools that Nurtured You (NSNY) described more in detail in the following.

NSNY - Nurture the Schools that Nurtured You - The Synopsis

Motivation: Societies around the world are far better today than a century ago. However, even today there is corruption, violence, greed, fanaticism, environmental pollution, etc., which are driving many cultures and societies into sub-animal behaviors. Dr. Murthy S. Gudipati has been thinking about this aspect for the several decades during which time he has seen half the world and lived in three continents. He is convinced that a permanent transformation of future humanity to lead “higher quality” life – in harmony among each other and with other life on Earth – and leave a better Earth for the next generations is only through “Education”. More children in their formative years get formal education on mathematics, science, geology, geography, astronomy, music, and sociology, more future citizens have the knowledge, information, and the ability to “think before acting”. This is the hope for social and cultural transformations in the future. Unfortunately, many parts of the world, including India, do not have effective educational programs at the “roots” of the society – those places where children have no access to information, inspiration, and mentoring to be educated. Many of these children end up in the cycle of neglect and violence. The Idea of NSNY is to bring inspiration, information, and mentoring to these underserved children through personal involvement of students/scholars/teachers/entrepreneurs at their hometowns/villages - hence Nurture the schools that Nurtured You (NSNY)

Gudipati Kusuma Kumari Scholarship

As a part of the initiative NSNY (Nurture the Schools that Nurtured You), this Scholarship is named after our mother Smt. Gudipati Kusuma Kumari. The scholarship will be awarded to students preparing to attend or attending public Colleges or Universities in India or Nepal, irrespective of religion, gender, or caste they were born with. Selection criteria include (a) excellent school record, (b) first graduate of the family, and (c) financially disadvantaged background (such as single parent, low-wage working-class parents, or no parents). The student should have qualities of self-determination and motivation to rise against the odds. The Scholarship is up to a maximum of Rs. 10,000 per year and awarded on yearly basis. We plan to select up to 10 candidates each year. See application details in the footnote*
As a single parent, widowed at the age of 30, Kusuma Kumari gathered strength through her faith and dared to move to Vijayawada with her four children so that they get education. This was the turning point of her life and our lives. All five of us lived in a single room, studying under streetlamps and kerosene lamps. The journey was incredibly tough, but she gave us not only life but also the opportunity for education!

Born as the first of the seven, Kusuma Kumari took care of her younger siblings. Her father lost all his riches due to a gambling addiction. Around the same time, she was married away at the age of 18 to my father, who completed his SSLC (10th grade) and got a job in Survey of India, a central government agency. It was not allowed for girls to go to school beyond 5th grade. During the next 10 years, she gave birth to the four of us and cared for our ailing father for his chronic stomach pain and ulcer to which he succumbed in our village. At the age of 30, Kusuma Kumari was left with a few acres of land and four children, between 2 and 11 years of age, the younger three being daughters. She dared more than anyone in her surroundings would have and moved back to the city so that we could get good education. At times she took loans over her only gold chain to augment our scholarships. There were moments in her life that might have made us four orphans, but she didn’t give up.

This scholarship is in the name of our mother Gudipati Kusuma Kumari to those students, whose Mothers and Fathers dared everything to send their children to schools. Education is empowerment that provides knowledge leading to wisdom.

If you are a recipient of this Scholarship, it is expected that you will (a) put all your efforts to excel in your education to the topmost possible, (b) when you can afford, help empower other underserved children to pursue education, (c) pass on the story of Kusuma Kumari to other Mothers so that they get strength, know they are not alone in this struggle to survive, and send their children to school, and (d) you live by example and promote peace and non-violence.

NOTE: A one page application written by the student may include her / his academic performance, future dreams, personal life story, about parents and siblings and financial back ground be sent by an email to: nsny.gkkscholarship@gmail.com
